Accessibility

Artshoppy wants everyone to be able to look at, read about and buy the works it shows, whatever device or assistive technology they use.

Our aim

We aim for the website to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. These are the international guidelines published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) for making web content usable by people with disabilities.

What we check

Every change to the website is tested automatically in a real browser before it is published. The tests check that:

  • the menus, search, filters and dialogs work with a keyboard alone;
  • text meets the WCAG AA contrast ratio in both the light and the dark theme;
  • buttons, links and form fields carry names a screen reader can announce;
  • each page has one main heading, and its headings follow in order;
  • pages work at a phone width of 390 pixels without scrolling sideways;
  • the Google Lighthouse accessibility audit scores at least 95 on the main pages.

Known limitations

  • Photographs of works are labelled with the work's title. The artist, medium and size are given as text beside each photograph, but the photograph itself does not carry a description of what the work shows.
  • On the Wall shows a work at true scale in a room. It is a visual preview; the same dimensions are given as text on every artwork page.
  • Services from other companies — WhatsApp and Google reCAPTCHA — are not under our control.
  • The website has not yet been audited by an independent accessibility specialist, or tested with screen-reader users. Automated tests find many problems, but not all of them.
