Reba Hore (1926–2008)
Reba Hore was an Indian painter, sculptor, and printmaker known for her expressive and deeply personal works. Born in Bengal, she initially studied Economics before pursuing art at the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata.
Her art focused on everyday life, domestic scenes, women, animals, and later moved toward abstraction and emotional introspection. Working in oils, pastels, mixed media, and terracotta, she developed a spontaneous style marked by bold lines and strong emotional depth.
Married to renowned artist Somnath Hore, she was long overshadowed but is now increasingly recognised as an important voice in Indian modern art. Her later works, including Diary of the Broken Leg (2004), reflect themes of pain, ageing, and resilience.
Today, Reba Hore’s legacy is being rediscovered and celebrated as a significant contribution to Indian art history.
