Shyamasree Basu(b.1938) studied at Kamala Girl's High School,where she regularly stood first. It was here,that her art teacher-the renowned painter from Paris,Shanu Lahiri induced in her the dream of becoming an artist. In 1955 she joined the Government College of Art & Craft. Among her teachers were Gopal Ghosh, Satyen Ghosal,Rathin Moitra amongst others. Her classmates were Dhiraj Choudhury,Sunil Das,Jogen Chowdhury & Anita Roy Chowdhury,all of whom went on to become renowned artists of the 60's. Through the 70's she visited Europe which enriched her own personal style & she gradually shifted from being a figurative painter to a more abstract style.
She became a member of The Society of Contemporary Artists from 1959-1961 & later joined the Calcutta Painters Group. Along with artists Shanu Lahiri,Karuna Shaha,Santosh Rohatgi & Meera Mukherjee they formed India's first women's artists group called 'The Group'. She held over 18 solo shows in India,Berlin,London,Glasgow,Wurzburg & Santaclara amongst others & in over 50 group shows in India & abroad. In 1960she received the silver medal from the Arts Society,Calcutta,Gold Medal feom the Governor of West Bengal in 1970,President's Gold Medal from AIFACS,New Delhi amongst others.
