Much like M.F.Husain, Chandra started his career as a billboard artist painting billboards on Calcutta. He studied at the Indian College of Art & Draughtsmanship,Calcutta in 1986 & in the same year he received the Gold Medal from Rabindra Bharati University,Calcutta for his outstanding excellence in the field of fine arts.
Looking beyond the styles typical of his predecessors from the Bengal School, he chose aspects of Indian culture, scenes from rural landscapes & the common man as his primary inspiration. His art draws equally from the natural world as well as the psychological. Effortlessly weaving together a strong contemporary milieu with elements of traditional imagery which makes his work exude a unique interplay of boldness & fragility.
