Chandra Bhattacharjee
About Chandra Bhattacharjee
Much like M. F. Husain, Chandra started his career as a billboard artist painting billboards in Calcutta. He studied at the Indian College of Art & Draughtsmanship, Calcutta, in 1986, and in the same year he received the Gold Medal from Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta, for excellence in the field of fine arts.
Looking beyond the styles typical of his predecessors from the Bengal School, he chose aspects of Indian culture, scenes from rural landscapes and the common man as his primary inspiration. His art draws equally from the natural world as well as the psychological. His work weaves together a contemporary milieu with elements of traditional imagery, combining boldness and fragility.
