About Gopal Ghose

As one of the founders of the path-breaking 'Calcutta Group' in 1943, Gopal Ghose was an important presence in the Indian art world. Trained in the style of the Neo-Bengal School, Ghose received a double diploma, both in painting and sculpture, from The Maharaja School of Art & Craft, Jaipur, from 1931-1935, and a diploma in sculpture under the guidance of Debi Prasad Roychowdhury at the Government School of Art, Madras. From 1950-1972 he taught at the Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta.

Dexterous in his use of watercolour, tempera, pen and ink, and pastels, he was known for reinterpreting the genre of landscape painting. The various forms of open nature became a powerful catalyst in the evolution of his work.

He was awarded the John D. Rockefeller 3rd Fellowship. From 1931 onwards he had shows in London, New York, Bombay and New Delhi.

His works could be found in the permanent collection of The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta; Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Calcutta; Museum of Bengal Modern Art, Calcutta; Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, Bangalore; Osian's, Mumbai; Jehangir Nicholson Collection, Mumbai; and Jane and Kito de Boer, Dubai, among others.
