About Sanat Kar

Sanat Kar was born in West Bengal in 1935 and achieved his diploma in painting from the Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta. Much of Kar's work was surreal in mood, feeling and content, with a childlike curiosity in which his figures appeared in dream-like scenes. As a result, his oeuvre hovered over the edge of reality, and his work was symbolic of the mysteries of life to which there were often no answers.

Kar's paintings were silent, and his palette ranged from mauve, dark green, browns and sepia, magentas and grey. A majority of his works played on the deep, dark recesses of the human mind. Figures and objects were distorted and barely recognisable, and left an uncomfortable feeling behind them.

Kar exhibited his work extensively across the world, including at ArtsIndia, New York (2006); Akarprakar, Kolkata (2006); Bengal Foundation, Dhaka (2000); and the Festival of India (1988), among others.
