About Shipra Bhattacharya

Born in 1954 in Kolkata, Shipra Bhattacharya is a B.Sc. graduate who later studied Fine Art at the College of Visual Arts, Kolkata, under her teacher and mentor Shuvaprasanna, whom she later married. Her early works were figurative, portraying everyday scenes she observed around her.

Her canvases often centre on a female figure enclosed within an inner, dreamlike world, rendered in intricate detail. While the female figure forms a central part of her work, it is more the inner consciousness of these women that the artist draws on, using bold yet soft colours and smooth brushwork. There is a mystery about each of her female protagonists, a suggestion of something more than meets the eye. Her later works show a departure from that phase as she moves from reality to fantasy. Women, both urban and rural, each seeking fulfilment of an inner, unfulfilled desire, have been the artist's muse.

The artist combines bright, bold colours with soft, curving strokes.

Since her first solo show in Kolkata in 1981, she has held numerous solo and group shows across India, London and New York. Her work is held in public, corporate and private collections.
