Subrata Gangopadhyay
About Subrata Gangopadhyay
Subrata Gangopadhyay was born on 2 January 1959. Before turning to painting, he worked in the communications industry, in press and publication, over a 47-year career that spanned both fields. He held his first solo exhibition, of drawings and paintings, at the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Calcutta, in 1985; the style was distinguishable from the conventional images of the period. His dramatisation of characters drew recognition from Satyajit Ray. A large painting by Gangopadhyay depicting Bengal's history is preserved in the Banquet Hall, Bengal Club, Kolkata. He was commissioned by government bodies and museums to execute busts of Indian personalities, some of which are held at the Victoria Memorial, Kolkata.
