Shanu Lahiri(1928-2013) was one of the most distinguished painters of India. Her elder brother-Nirode Mazumdar was an avant-garde painter of Paris who founded the Calcutta Group. An alumnus of the Govt.College of Art & Craft,she was the first student of the college to receive the President’s Gold Medal roe her contribution to the field of visual arts.
She studied further at the École du Louvre & the Académie Julian in Paris. In Paris,she soaked in the Parisian culture & befriended painters & sculptors like Braque,Brancusi,Cocteau,André Breton & others who would drop by each day to see her & Nirode Mazumdar.She served as Dean for the Visual Arts Faculty at Rabindra Bharati University & was conferred a D.Litt by them as well. She often chose her subjects from her immediate surroundings & blended the folk traditions of Indian art with that of the French masters. Her works were characterised by vivid colors & dynamic lines. Apart from being a painter of high order,she also lent her hands at sculpture & Durga image making.
From the 50’s she started exhibiting in Toronto & San Francisco,Montreal & England & in our Indian cities like Delhi,Bombay,Baroda & Calcutta as well. Her works are to be found in the Berlin Gallery, Dominion Art Gallery,Montreal; the Lalit Kala Akademi; the Salar Jung Museum;The National Gallery of Modern Art; The Museum of Bengal Modern Art,Kolkata; The Birla Academy of Art & Culture,Kolkata; The Academy of Fine Arts,Kolkata; amongst others.
