Thota Vaikuntam (b.1942)is a leading artist. His dark & dusky Telangana women, have become icons much loved & sought after by the connoisseurs,as are his pandits & other village folk, reminiscent of the place he grew in. A beautiful amalgamation of tradition & contemporaneity exists in his oeuvre.
His large body of work has been consistent in its search for a close encounter with form & fable. Being a ‘regionalist’ & though infatuated by women,he has also painted men. He paints & draws preachers & pandits who appear wise & knowledgeable.
Amongst his many honours & awards,he received the State Lalit Kala Akademi Award from Andhra Pradesh,The National Award for Painting in 1993,The Biennale Award from Bharat Bhavan,Bhopal.
His paintings can be found in numerous prestigious collections like-The National Gallery of Modern Art & Lalit Kala Akademi,New Delhi; Salar Jung Museum,Andhra Pradesh State Lalit Kala Akademi;State Academy of Art,Chennai; Glenbarra Art Museum,Japan; Chester & David Herwitz Family Collection,USA.
