About this work
Untitled is painted in gouache on paper — as noted in its own catalogue title — sized 33 × 81 cm; no year is recorded. Chittaprosad Bhattacharya was a self-taught Bengal artist best known for the social-realist watercolours, linocuts and woodcuts he made documenting the 1943 Bengal famine, but in the 1950s onward he also worked across landscapes, portraits, nudes, still lifes and animal subjects, the group this Animal-subject piece falls into.
Chittaprosad Bhattacharya
Chittaprosad Bhattacharya (1915–1978) was a revolutionary Indian political artist and printmaker whose deeply humanistic and socially conscious work defined mid-20th century protest art in India. Born in Naihati, West Bengal, he rose to prominence in the 1930s through his sharp, satirical pen-and-ink sketches that fiercely criticized colonial rule, feudal oppression, and the caste system.
