Romi Banerjee Majumder
Romi Banerjee Majumder studied Textile Design at the Government College of Art & Craft,Calcutta. This was followed by her postgraduation from The National Institute Of Design(NID) Ahmedabad.
In her work, very special feelings & experiences are represented in a metaphoric mood. The sense of the feminine identity can be found significantly. The complexity of motherhood & the mother's struggle in her urban life finds expression in her vast oeuvre. In the recent years she has engaged herself in a special search for quietness, depth & lyricism in nature's manifestations. Her use of fluid & transparent colours, controlled accidental effects, figures drawn in lines & free floating organic forms reveal her deeper understanding of the bounty of nature & the cycle of human life within it. A timeless silence can be felt in her work & at the same time they display silent protests of a woman who is deeply sympathetic to the plight of her community.
Recently she has been using material other than paint on canvas. Old wood blocks, patterned fabrics, even paper create different points of interest. Above all, when one sees her work, one is always struck with the clarity with which she has been able to capture 'the moment'. They are all incredibly tender & give such a spectrum of emotional engagement. What marks Romi's work out from the rest, is that she has incredible humanity, empathy & feeling to get the essence of the subject she paints.
She has held over five solo shows & participated in over fifteen group shows across India.
