Rural Urban looks at the city and the country around it through the work of five artists working in different mediums. David Malaker's night scenes show a city in flux, struggling to keep pace with rapid urbanisation. Subhendu Sarkar paints monsoon scenes and lotus ponds from the villages in watercolour, with quick, controlled brushwork. Srabani Sarkar's woodcuts turn to surreal imagery, and Chhandok Majumder's temperas draw on urban and folk religious iconography. Debojit Roy's terracotta animals, taken from village life, close the show on a lighter note.
The show sets five artists who work in different fields side by side, and each painting and sculpture keeps an idiom of its own.
