Shanu Lahiri's painting and writing record the social, political and cultural turns of colonial and post-colonial India, and of Bengal in particular. Her work responds to the Second World War, the freedom struggle and the Bengal Famine, and carries forward what the Bengal Renaissance began.
The works are not hung in chronological order. They are chosen to show how closely the layers of a life press on one another, and the selection gains from refusing a fixed sequence.
