Questions
Buying from the gallery
How do I know a work is genuine?
Every original sold by the gallery is issued with a certificate of authenticity. It names the work, the artist, the medium, the dimensions and the gallery. Before you buy, you can ask the gallery how it acquired a work and for photographs of the signature and the back.
Where do the works come from?
From artists directly, and from the estates and private collectors who hold older work. Artshoppy makes nothing itself.
How does the gallery choose what it shows?
Artists submit their work, and the gallery's owner reviews every piece before it is listed. The gallery accepts what meets its standard for quality, authenticity and condition.
Can I see how a work will look on my wall?
Yes. Every artwork page has On the Wall, which hangs the work in a room drawn to true scale from its measured dimensions. You can switch rooms and try frame styles. It is a guide to size and proportion; colours on a screen always differ a little from the work.
Can I ask about a work before I buy it?
Yes, and you do not need an account. Ask about this work on the artwork page opens WhatsApp or your email with the work's title and reference filled in. Ask for condition photographs, a detail, the back of the work, or a shipping quote.
Do I need an account to buy?
No, you can check out as a guest. An account keeps your orders and the artists you follow in one place.
What does Price on request mean?
The work is for sale but its price is not published. Use Ask about this work and the gallery will reply with the price.
Can I make an offer?
Yes, on works that allow it — the option shows on the artwork page, and offers start from 70 % of the asking price; the gallery does not accept one below that floor. An offer is a conversation, not a contract: it commits neither side, and the gallery may accept, counter or decline without giving a reason. If the gallery accepts, it reserves the work for you for 72 hours and emails you a payment link good for exactly that period — see Can I reserve a work while I decide? below.
Can I reserve a work while I decide?
Only by making an offer the gallery accepts. There is no way to ask for a work to be put aside while you think about it: works are one of a kind, and a work goes to whoever completes an order for it first. If the gallery accepts an offer, though, it reserves that work for you for 72 hours and emails you a payment link good for exactly that period; while the reservation holds, the work shows as Reserved and nobody else can buy it. If the 72 hours pass without an order, the reservation lifts, the link and the agreed price stop working, and the work returns to the gallery at its listed price.
Does the gallery charge buyers a commission?
No commission is charged to the buyer. You pay the listed price and, for delivery in India, GST. Delivery is free, in India and abroad; if you are outside India, you also pay your own country's import duties and taxes on arrival.
Are works sold framed?
Works are sent unframed unless the artwork page says otherwise. You can try frames on the work in On the Wall. Framing is not sold at checkout; if you would like the gallery to frame a work, ask and it will quote.
Can I get a condition report?
Yes, on request — ask on WhatsApp at +91 99039 71710 or at support@artshoppy.com, and the gallery will send photographs of the work's surface, edges and back.
Can I see a work in person?
Works cannot be viewed in person — the website is where they are seen. To collect a purchase from the gallery, arrange it by WhatsApp or email.
Is there a wishlist, or reviews?
No. To keep track of the work you like, follow its artists: your account lists who you follow, and the gallery can tell you when new work by them arrives.
Can I commission a work from an artist?
Some artists accept commissions. On an artist's profile, Commission this artist lets you tell the gallery the subject, rough size, where it would hang and by when. The gallery takes it to the artist, and the answer comes from them.
How should I look after a work?
Keep it out of direct sunlight, away from damp walls, bathrooms, kitchens and air-conditioner outlets, and handle it by the frame or stretcher. Collector support has fuller guidance.
How does the gallery use my personal data?
Only to run your account, deliver your order and answer your messages. It does not sell personal data or use advertising trackers. The privacy policy has the details.
How do I contact the gallery?
Use Ask about this work on any artwork, or see Collector support for WhatsApp, email and the gallery's hours.
Buying in India
Do prices include GST?
No. Prices are shown before GST, and GST is added at checkout for an Indian delivery address: 5 % on works of art and 0 % on books. A work listed at ₹70,000 costs ₹73,500.
How can I pay?
Cash on Delivery is how you pay today, for addresses in India, with no upper order value, in cash at the door — the courier does not accept card or UPI.
Can I pay by cheque or bank transfer?
No. For now every order is paid by Cash on Delivery, in cash at the door — including an order agreed directly with the gallery on WhatsApp or email. Cheque and bank transfer are not accepted.
Do I get a GST invoice?
Yes. Every order comes with a GST invoice showing the tax charged and the gallery's GSTIN.
How much does delivery cost?
Delivery is free to any address in India.
If you buy more than one work, ask the gallery whether they can travel together.
How long does delivery take?
Works are dispatched within 48 hours of the order being confirmed. Once dispatched, delivery within India typically takes 3 to 7 days — a typical time, not a guarantee. You receive a tracking reference when the work is dispatched.
Can I collect a work from the gallery in Kolkata?
Yes. You can collect your work from the gallery in Kolkata — arrange it with us on +91 99039 71710 or support@artshoppy.com. Collection is from Ground Floor, 34/1G Ballygunge Circular Road, Kolkata 700019, West Bengal, India.
How is a work packed, and is it insured?
Works are shipped either rolled in a tube or crated, whichever suits the work, carried within India by Delhivery. Every shipment is insured in transit through the courier, at the invoice value.
Can I change or cancel my order?
You can cancel or change an order within 24 hours of the order, and before it is dispatched. Write to the gallery with your order number.
When will I get a refund?
Within 7 working days — from the cancellation for a cancelled order, or from the returned work reaching the gallery for a return. An order paid by Cash on Delivery is refunded to a bank account you give the gallery.
Can I return a work?
Returns are accepted within 30 days of delivery, with the work in the condition it was delivered and in its original packing. See Returns and cancellation.
What if a work arrives damaged?
Keep the packing, photograph the packaging and the damage before you unpack further, and tell the gallery within 48 hours of delivery. The gallery offers a conservator's repair, if you agree, or a full refund when the work comes back.
Can I buy a National Art Treasure?
Yes. The fourteen National Art Treasures in the gallery can be bought and delivered anywhere in India. Under the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972 they cannot be taken out of India.
For artists
How can I show my work with Artshoppy?
Artshoppy is a gallery rather than an open marketplace, so there is no seller account to register and no way to upload work yourself. Write to the gallery with a short statement and photographs of recent work, with the title, year, medium and height × width in centimetres for each. The artist handbook lists what to send. Write to the gallery at support@artshoppy.com or WhatsApp +91 99039 71710.
Is there a charge to submit work?
There is no charge to submit work for review.
What does it cost me if a work sells?
The gallery takes a 30% commission on the sale price; you receive 70%. The gallery pays for photographing and packing your work, and for framing where a work is framed; delivery to the buyer is free, so you do not pay to ship a sold work to its buyer.
How does the gallery decide which work to take on?
The gallery's owner reviews every submission and decides which artists and works the gallery takes on. The gallery does not list work it cannot vouch for, because every original it sells is issued with its certificate of authenticity.
How long does it take to hear back?
Within two working days (Monday to Saturday).
Will the gallery list my works for me?
Yes. The gallery writes the details and puts each work on the site. Send photographs and measurements with your submission; if the photographs are not good enough for the site, the gallery photographs the work itself.
Can I sell the same works elsewhere at the same time?
Yes — you are free to show and sell with other galleries, and to sell your other works anywhere. A work consigned to Artshoppy stays at the gallery, so it cannot be sold elsewhere while it is here.
How and when will I be paid?
By bank transfer, to details the gallery collects when it takes your work on — never through the website. Because a returned work is not paid out, payment follows 30 days after the buyer's 30-day return window closes, about 60 days after the work is delivered to its buyer. All the gallery needs from you for tax purposes is your PAN and bank details.
Where is my work held, and can I withdraw it?
Your work is held at the gallery in Kolkata, on consignment, until it sells. You deliver it to the gallery there. To withdraw a work, give the gallery 30 days' notice, then collect it from the gallery in Kolkata.
Can prints or editions of my originals be sold?
The gallery does not make or sell reproductions of your originals. If you make prints yourself, in a limited or open edition, those are works in their own right and can be shown and sold like any other work.
I live outside India. Can I approach the gallery?
No. The gallery works only with artists based in India.
What appears on my profile, and can I change it?
Your profile shows your name, a portrait, a biography, where you live and work, your education, selected exhibitions and press, and your works on show. Nothing about a living artist is published without their agreement: the gallery sends you the biography to correct first. Write to the gallery to change anything, including the spelling of your name.
How should I photograph my work?
Straight on, in daylight without direct sun or flash, cropped to the edges of the work, with no filters or watermark. Send the largest file you have, at least 3,000 pixels on the longer side, so the zoom on the artwork page can show the surface. Add a close photograph of a passage of surface and one of the signature.
Can collectors commission me through the gallery?
Collectors can ask about a commission from your profile. The gallery brings the request to you, and whether you take it on is your decision. Tell the gallery if you do not accept commissions.
How do I contact the gallery as an artist?
Write to the gallery at support@artshoppy.com or on WhatsApp at +91 99039 71710.
