About this work
Watercolour on paper, painted in 1985, the same year as Figure In Red. It is worked in the expressionistic register Gobardhan Ash used through much of his later career, a founding member of the Young Artists' Union (1931) and the Calcutta Group of Bengal modernists.
Gobardhan Ash
Gobardhan Ash was a close contemporary of the early stalwarts of Modernism in India. In 1926, he joined the Government School, Calcutta, but was not satisfied with what he learnt there over the next four years.
