About this work
Watercolour on paper, painted in 1989. Gobardhan Ash worked in this figurative, human-centred vein throughout his six-decade career as a founding member of the Young Artists' Union (1931) and the Calcutta Group, the circle of Bengal modernists who turned from academic and mythological convention toward everyday, observed subjects.
Gobardhan Ash
Gobardhan Ash was a close contemporary of the early stalwarts of Modernism in India. In 1926, he joined the Government School, Calcutta, but was not satisfied with what he learnt there over the next four years.
