About this work

Mountains is worked in pastel on paper, a landscape from 1974, six years before Gopal Ghose's death. Ghose co-founded the Calcutta Group in 1943 and travelled widely across India painting landscapes, reworking the genre with an expressionistic handling drawn from European Expressionism and Cubism rather than the Bengal School he trained in. Pastel is a less common medium for him than the watercolour he was best known for.

Gopal Ghose

As one of the founders of the path-breaking 'Calcutta Group' in 1943, Gopal Ghose was an important presence in the Indian art world. Trained in the style of the Neo-Bengal School, Ghose received a double diploma, both in painting and sculpture, from The Maharaja School of Art & Craft, Jaipur, from 1931-1935, and a diploma in sculpture under the guidance of Debi Prasad Roychowdhury at the Government School of Art, Madras.
