About this work

Babu with bird is painted in tempera on board, a figurative portrait from 2015. The Babu figure is Lalu Prasad Shaw's long-running subject, a stylised Bengali gentleman drawn from the Kalighat Pat "Babu Bibi" tradition he has worked in for over six decades. This collection also holds Bibi with bird and Bibi with ring, the companion figures who recur alongside him across the artist's catalogued work here.
