About this work

Bibi with bird is painted in tempera on board, a figurative portrait completed in 2020. Lalu Prasad Shaw has built his practice around the stylised Bengali Babu and Bibi couple he first began observing at a Santiniketan photography studio, a pairing drawn from the Kalighat Pat "Babu Bibi" tradition. Two more works catalogued in this collection, Babu with bird and Bibi with ring, carry the same recurring pair.

Lalu Prasad Shaw
