Atul Bose was a versatile Indian painter and graphic artist who was an ardent practicer of New Naturalism along with Jamini Roy and Hemen Majumdar as
opposed to the British Academic Art that prevailed at that time. He intensively worked with oils, watercolors and pastels and had a knack for elaborate detailing while capturing human anatomy. He would often use somber colors to infuse life into his subjects and surroundings. Bose also remained heavily influenced by his social and political milieu. His drawings on The Bengal Famine reflect an urgent social concern that makes a strong statement.

Bose was first eductaed at the Government College of Art and Crafts, Calcutta, following whcih a scholarship enabled him to study at The Royal Academy in London. Bose was an instrument institution builder. In 1919 he established the The Indian Academy of Art with Hemen Mazumdar and in 1921 he along with Bhabani Chandra Laha, set up the Indian School of Oriental Art. He also served as the principal of the Government College of Art and Crafts, Calcutta from 1945-1948 following which he became its director.
