Sewon Rai

Sewon Rai (b 1991)

Sewon Rai received his MFA degree from Rabindra Bharati University in 2017. He got  Lalitkala National Research Scholarship  2017-18.
Sewon's thoughts and ideas of work  emerge from the violent socio political scenario of the present times.  Many of his works are based on the dystopian vision of the world, like wars and scenes of annihilation. The ideas of his "poppy flower" series is rooted in his experiences and his local surroundings. The seasonal poppy flower on barren land comes from his childhood memories. The landscape which he creates and the flowers he paint stands as metaphor for blood and aftermath of wars, which he sees happening today. The Scarlet bloody beauty of hundreds and thousands of red poppies, could be tears, could be blood or could be simply poppies growing unnaturally covering the barren land. It also has reference to John McCrae’s “Field of Flanders”, a poem written during the First World War which has long been the symbol of remembrance. The poppies encircle creating not only a spectacular visual but also a location for personal reflection. The painting is intended to reflect the magnitude of such suffering and loss and create a powerful visual commemoration.
