About this work
Mixed media on board, painted in 2014 — the same year Saffronart exhibited a series of his titled "Light in Banaras Ghat". Paresh Maity has returned to the ghats of Varanasi repeatedly among his city subjects, alongside the canals of Venice and the deserts of Rajasthan, in a recurring visual vocabulary. In these ghat pictures, the glowing steps and lamps of the riverfront are folded into near-abstract arrangements of verticals and diagonals.
Paresh Maity
Paresh Maity was born in 1965 in Tamluk, a small town in West Bengal of great antiquity with a remarkable heritage of terracotta art. While in school he made clay images of gods and goddesses and sold them to earn money for his education.
