About this work

Deity-1 is an acrylic on paper, 43 × 36 cm, dated 2016, from late in Rabin Mondal's career. Mondal co-founded the Calcutta Painters group in 1964, and this work's catalogued still-life subject sits within the tribal-inflected, mask-like figuration that recurs across his later paintings.

Rabin Mondal

Born in Kolkata in 1929, Rabin Mondal was a pioneering Indian artist and a founding member of the Calcutta Painters. Despite working in relative obscurity for much of his life, his artistic brilliance gained national recognition in 2005 through retrospective exhibitions in Kolkata, New Delhi, and Mumbai.
