About this work

Acrylic on paper, dated 2016, two years before Mondal's death. It comes from late in his career, a painter who co-founded the Calcutta Painters group in Kolkata in 1964 and whose work turned expressionist, sometimes with a cubist inflection, over the years that followed.

Rabin Mondal

Born in Kolkata in 1929, Rabin Mondal was a pioneering Indian artist and a founding member of the Calcutta Painters. Despite working in relative obscurity for much of his life, his artistic brilliance gained national recognition in 2005 through retrospective exhibitions in Kolkata, New Delhi, and Mumbai.
