Rini Dhumal

Rini Dhumal (b 1948)

Rini Dhumal(b.1948)  studied art at Shantiniketan. This was followed by a Masters Degree in Painting, from the Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad University,Baroda. She then travelled to Paris to study at Atelier 17 under William Hayter.

Rini’s protagonists, though not confrontational, are aware, introspective beings. As silent spectators, they perceive their place & situation in a patriarchal society. The wide staring outward gaze & heavy outline of figures of her early works have mellowed into withdrawn, self-reflective beings that seek remedial strategies from the reservoir of their inner strength.

In 1972, she received the Chancellor’s Gold Medal & in 1974, she received the Governor’s Gold Medal in Calcutta. In 1985 & 1988, she received the AIFACS Award in Delhi, & in the same year she received the National Award.

Her works can befound in the permanent collections of The National Gallery of Modern Art & Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi; Bibliothéque Nationale,Paris; Gallerie Arts & Data,Frankfurt amongst others.
