About this work
Tempera on canvas board. Sanat Kar is best known as a printmaking pioneer — devising the cardboard-intaglio and sun-mica techniques as head of the Graphics department at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan — but tempera was his most-worked painting medium, built up in layers to give his surrealist, distorted figures a dreamlike, unresolved quality.
Sanat Kar
Sanat Kar was born in West Bengal in 1935 and achieved his diploma in painting from the Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta. Much of Kar's work was surreal in mood, feeling and content, with a childlike curiosity in which his figures appeared in dream-like scenes.
