About this work
Tempera on canvas board, in the layered technique Sanat Kar used most often in his paintings — surrealist, distorted figures built up through overlapping washes. He is better known as a printmaking pioneer, having devised the cardboard-intaglio and sun-mica techniques as head of the Graphics department at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan.
Sanat Kar
Sanat Kar was born in West Bengal in 1935 and achieved his diploma in painting from the Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta. Much of Kar's work was surreal in mood, feeling and content, with a childlike curiosity in which his figures appeared in dream-like scenes.
