About this work

Man Smoking is an acrylic on canvas painted in 2001, a single-figure portrait study. It sits within Lahiri's six-decade Kolkata practice, in which the human figure was her constant subject, worked across oil, watercolour and acrylic and developed in bold outline and bright, largely flat colour rather than close tonal modelling.

Shanu Lahiri

Shanu Lahiri (1928-2013) was a student of the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata. She was the first student of the college to receive the AIFACS President's Gold Medal.
