About this work

Smoking is an acrylic on canvas from 2005, a portrait study built around a single seated figure. It belongs to Lahiri's long-running Kolkata practice of figure painting, developed in bold outline and bright, largely flat colour rather than close tonal modelling.

Shanu Lahiri

Shanu Lahiri (1928-2013) was a student of the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata. She was the first student of the college to receive the AIFACS President's Gold Medal.
