About this work

Babu and Bibi Buying Fish is painted in acrylic on the reverse of an acrylic sheet, 61 × 61 cm, dated 2020: a well-dressed couple at a fish market, bent over four fish laid out for sale. Shyamal Mukherjee's recurring couple carries the Bengal School's figurative tradition into a humorous, contemporary idiom; its companion, Babu and Bibi Buying Fans, is also in the catalogue.
