About this work

This acrylic-on-canvas Garba, 76 × 91 cm and dated 2022, depicts the Gujarati circle dance in the same realist, figurative register as the artist's Dandiya paintings from the same year. Subrata Gangopadhyay trained at the Government College of Art & Crafts, Calcutta, and later worked as senior artist for the Ananda Bazar Group.

Subrata Gangopadhyay was born on 2 January 1959. Before turning to painting, he worked in the communications industry, in press and publication, over a 47-year career that spanned both fields.
