Gopal Ghose

Gopal Ghose (b 1913) - (d 1980)

As one of the founders of the path-breaking 'Calcutta Group' in 1943,Gopal Ghoshe had been an important presence in the Indian art world. Trained in the style of the Neo-Bengal School,Ghoshe received a double diploma both in painting & sculpture from The Maharaja School of Art & Craft,Jaipur from 1931-1935 & a diploma in sculpture under the guidance of Debi Prasad Roychowdhury at the Government School of Art,Madras. From 1950-1972 he taught at the Government College of Art & Craft,Calcutta.

Dexterous in his use of watercolour,tempera,pen & ink & pastels,the artist became a legend in his lifetime for reinterpreting the genre of landscape painting. The various forms of open nature became a powerful catalyst in the evolution of his work.

He was awarded the John D.Rockfeller 3rd Fellowship. From 1931 onwards he had shows in London,New York,Bombay & New Delhi.

His works can be found in the permanent collection of The National Gallery of Modern Art,New Delhi; Academy of Fine Arts,Calcutta; Birla Academy of Art & Culture,Calcutta; Museum of Bengal Modern Art,Calcutta; Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath,Bangalore; Osian's Mumbai; Jehangir Nicholson Collection,Mumbai; Jane & Kito de Boer,Dubai amongst others.
