Debojit Roy

Debojit Roy (b 1996)

Debojit Roy received his Graduation and Post-Graduation degrees from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. As a young boy, Debojit was inspired by clay which prompted him to take up clay from an early age. Back then, without any formal training in the arts, he began making small figures, birds, animals and various Gods and Goddesses from his imagination. His stint at the art college enabled him to study art history which gave him an indepth understanding and perspective on the different trends, approaches, styles and art practices in India and across the world. Similarly, by oberving the skilled artisans at Kumartuli who sculpt the images of Gods and Goddesses enabled him to have a basic understanding of form and the various organic and sculptural elements that went into making these sculptures.

Roy's animal series stand out for their uniqueness- with a rural approach marked by a playfulness, Debojit Roy's art explores the endless possibilities of terracotta and how he wishes to push new boundaries and add a distinct stamp to the medium.
